Last Wednesday, 25 Village volunteers received the prestigious President’s Volunteer Service Award for their work supporting Give Kids The World and the children it serves. The national award celebrates and honors volunteers who have logged at least 4,000 hours volunteering at nonprofits across the country.
That’s the equivalent of working 500, eight-hour days.
At an elegant dinner and awards ceremony, each honoree received a framed certificate, a pin, and a signed letter from President Donald Trump. Village President and CEO Pamela Landwirth thanked the volunteers, saying they are an indispensable part of the Village team.
“I have the pleasure of reading every single letter that wish families send in,” said Pam. “They always mention their favorite things … the ice cream, the theme parks. And every time, without fail, they mention you all.”
Award winner David Konstan has been volunteering at the Village since 1997. He often greets families and checks them in.
“I greet families after long days of traveling and after they’ve come out of a very stressful environment,” said David. “I just want to make them laugh and make them feel at ease.”
David’s sense of humor endears him to families and volunteers alike. When asked about being nominated for this award, he said, “Nominated for what? I thought I was just here for the free food.”
David went on to talk about what drives him to volunteer, saying “It’s not a job or a mission, it’s a lot of fun. But people have to want to do it and make the time for it.”
Dee Dee Martin, the Village’s volunteer service director, nominated the volunteers and organized the evening’s festivities.
“We wanted to do something special to thank them, recognize them, and honor them for their service to our families,” she said. “They’re the core, the heart of the Village, and the impact they have on our families is immeasurable.”
Pam, Dee Dee, and David all summed up what everyone at Give Kids The World knows: The Village wouldn’t be what it is today without the service and dedication of our volunteers – and these 25 are shining examples of that generosity.
